Sequencing Rationale of Health Curriculum
On this page you will find sequencing rationale about
Health Curriculum.
The curriculum design branches out into eight major units. The course will be organized to the world-related model of physical attributes. Eight units are similar in difficulty but sequenced with understanding first unit before second and so on. As the students learn about each unit, they form a relation between units and their importance. The first unit of sequence of the course will be “Wellness.” This unit is designed to introduce topic what is health and its importance. This is the reason why it is number one. With high rates of obesity in the United States, it’s important that pupils understand why it’s important to stay healthy and prevent diseases. One of the lessons in this unit will be about being able to take charge of own life. Students will be presented with healthy and risky factors and they will decide which one they are going to pick. The second unit will be “Physical Fitness” because it is one of the most important ways to maintain health in a fit condition and also one of the best ways to lose weight. Sequencing rationale of this unit will reinforce fitness components, benefits of physical activity, skeletal system, muscular system, and how to avoid injuries. Some of the activities that will be introduced in this unit will be labeling muscular system, identifying fitness components, comparing skeletal and muscular system, and creating safe exercise routines. The next unit will be about “Nutrition” because physical fitness and nutrition go hand-to-hand in order to maintain healthy body or lose weight. This unit will introduce students to six essential nutrients, food pyramid and its guidelines for healthy eating, and diets. In this unit students will define nutrients and food pyramid. Students will choose foods that are excellent sources of six essential nutrients. One of the major projects in this unit will be creating one-day diet. They will construct their diets based on food pyramid recommendations. Students will be able to analyze their diets and compare to other diets from other students. Finally, students will evaluate and make final corrections to their selections. The unit “Growth and Development,” will be the fourth unit. The reasons it is fourth because students need to know about body and it changes that occurring during adolescence years. Students will learn about beginning of life cycle. This unit has an important place in this curriculum because it goes after wellness, physical activity, and nutrition. As students study about topics from this unit they will be able to apply correct aspect with exercise and nutrition in their early life. The next unit will be “Body Systems” because the body systems that students are going to be studying are going to be going through big changes. The unit will introduce male and female reproductive systems and their functions. These topics will be treated with care and attention. Some of the activities and projects that will be included in this unit will be labeling and defining functions of major reproductive organs on the diagrams. Students will analyze, compare, and evaluate both reproductive systems in classroom activities. The students will develop deeper understanding by watching videos and answering questions based on Bloom’s Taxonomy comprehension. The sixth unit will be “ Diseases.” The reasons for this unit to be sixth is because after learning about body systems students need to know about different dysfunctions or diseases that may occur to someone’s body. This unit will introduce infectious, noninfectious diseases, STDs, HIV, AIDS, and integumentary system. Lessons in this unit will include ways of preventing diseases and developing a relation to the previous units about wellness, physical activity, and nutrition. The major project in this unit will be creating a poster about diseases and outlining their symptoms, cures, and most importantly ways to prevent them. The unit “Medicines” will be seventh in this curriculum of sequencing rationale because after studying diseases students will learn about different types of medicines that they can use to treat minor or major sicknesses. In this unit students will make relation to diseases unit and learn about different medicines, roles of medicines and its safe use. This unit will include hands-on-activities that will teach and assess students to be able to read medicine labels. Lastly, sequencing rationale explains “Drugs” unit. This unit is last because it contains topics that could also harm human body by personal choice. Also, because using drugs is complete opposite of following healthy lifestyle and it contradicts wellness. It introduces topics such as tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs. It’s important to discuss them to make students aware of horrific consequences and teach students resistance skills. This is the sequencing rationale of this curriculum.
