MyPyramid Sample Lesson

Standards: NJCCS 2.1. Wellness

Objectives:

  • The students will define the MyPyramid.
  • The students will discuss how to use the food pyramid.
  • The students will describe tips to control fat, sugars, and sodium in foods.

Materials:

  • Empty slate of food pyramid.
  • Grocery store coupon magazine with food pictures.

Skills:

  • Define the MyPyramid.
  • Select foods according to each food category from the pyramid.

Procedure:

Introductory Activity: Have students list some popular lunch choices for people their age. Then, ask them to use a show of hands to vote on which lunches they think are the most nutritious and healthful. Discuss how students made their judgment.

Developmental Activity: Picture of food pyramid will be displayed. The teacher will interpret the diagram while the students are filling their empty slate of food pyramid.

Divide the class into six groups, and assign each one a food group. Have students compete to see which group can list the most examples of foods in their group. Give students two minutes to complete their list. At the end of the two minutes, have each group share its list. Ask the rest of the class to add to each list and name the recommended number of servings from each group per day.

Students remain in the previous groups and are trying to resolve case study. Imagine someone’s younger brother has a sweet tooth and loves to snack candy. What alternatives might they suggest? How might they help change his food habits? Ask the members of each group to share their suggestions with the class.

Concluding Activity: Define food pyramid? Name six categories of food pyramid, and identify the recommended serving sizes. Which types of food should you eat most often?Which types of food should you eat less often?What kind of beverages might be high in sugar?What are some of the health problems that can arise from unhealthful eating patterns?How might you benefit if you improved your eating patterns?Which foods do you eat on a regular basis that may be high in sodium or salt?

Assessment:

For homework, the students will be provided with empty slate of food pyramid. The food pyramid to be filled in with correct food categories, food servings, and at least three food examples from each section.
