Interrelation Between the Muscular System and the Skeletal System
STANDARD - 2.1 GRADE - 11 GOAL - The students will learn functions and structures of muscular system and skeletal system.SWBAT - Describe functions and structures of the two systems
- Expain the relation between muscular and skeletal systems
- Identify ways to keep these systems healthy
LEARNING TASKS - Put up the DO NOW question on the board. "If you would have no bones and muscles, what would your body look like?" I'm sure that your students will give you right responses. For example - pile of clothes. Then, begin presenting muscular and skeletal systems. The muscular system is made of muscles that moves your bones and your body. Its function is to move all your body parts. These are the body organs that you have control over. Also, it moves muscles of the organs that you have no control over. For example - heart, intestines, diaphragm. The human body contains over 600 muscles. See the picture below for major muscles.

There are three types of muscles -- Skeletal
- you can control them. They are called voluntary. Example - arms, face, abdomen- Cardiac
- you have no control over it. It's called involuntary. Example - heart- Smooth
- you have no control over them. They are also called involuntary. Example - intestines, stomach
As you already know, your muscles are controled by nervous system. All muscles have fibers and fibers are triggered by a neurons that causes fibers to get longer or get shorter. In another word - it contracts. Muscles can only pull - they cannot push. Therefore - the muscles must work in pairs. For example - when you flex your arm - your biceps get shorter and your triceps get longer. Now - when you want to extend your arm - your triceps will get shorter and your biceps will get longer. So - they are simply working together.Ok - now let's talk about frame system. The skeletal system is the frame system of bones that is attached by tissues. Its functions is to - - Support the your body
- Protect your internal organs
- Produce red and white blood cells
Adults have 206 bones.

The bones are hard - but they are spongy inside. The bones meet in the joints. The joints are the places where bones meet and are connected by special connector tissues. There are three types of joints -- Hinge joint
- example is the elbow- Pivot joint
- example is the neck- Ball and socket joint
- example is the hip There are three types of connectors -- Cartilage
- it's a tissue that covers ends of the bones and also supports ears and nose- Ligament
- it's a tissue that connects bone to bone- Tendon
- it's a tissue that connects the muscle to the bone So - these two systems cannot exits without each other. They support and move your body. It's important to have stong muscles and healthy muscles. Here are a few tips to achive that - - Eat a healthy diet
- bones need calcium and muscles need carbohydrates for energy and protein for growth- Regular exercise
- exercise is good but don't forget to warm up and cool down- Keep straight posture
- it keeps joints in place and muscles in shape- Rest between exercise
- allow your muscles to recover and get re-energized Conclusion - What system moves your body? What system supports and protects your body? What is the relation between the two systems? Name three connectors and identify each.
