Healthy People and Their Statement of Purpose
An amount of healthy people in the USA is decreasing. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), more than one third of U.S. adults - more than 72 million people - and 16% of U.S. children are obese. Since 1960, obesity rates for adults have doubled and rates for children have tripled. Obesity rates among all groups in society – irrespective of age, sex, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, education level, or geographic region – have increased markedly. CDCP (2009). Obesity is increasing in our schools and in society as a whole. Obese children are one predictor of unhealthy future of our children and adults. It’s a very important issue. As a result, an effective Health Curriculum has to be in place. The Health Curriculum is targeted at 6-8 grades. By teaching students how to follow healthy lifestyle, they will not only be able to reduce obesity but also take that knowledge and skill into their home and communities, contributing to a healthier society. Due to the fact that obesity affects more than 72 million people and 16% are children, an understanding of skills and ability to follow healthy lifestyles are important for students to possess. Victims of obesity, for example, often experience physical and emotional problems. Victims develop diabetes, heart disease, and poor self-esteem. This can greatly influence school performance because students’ attention is drawn away from academics. As obesity increases, more money and more doctors are needed. Then, it becomes federal and societal issue. It’s imperative that Health Curriculum is implemented. It’s important because students have the opportunity to grow, learn and develop as healthy individuals. As a result of this curriculum, students will learn concepts, skills, and strategies about wellness, physical fitness, nutrition, growth, development, body systems, medicines, drugs, and diseases. These topics will help students to deal with their health challenges effectively in their future.
