GOAL - The students will learn how to make healthy food choices and why starch and fiber are healthy.
SWBAT
- Understand why starch and fiber are important
- Identify which food to limit
- Explaining ways on cutting back of bad food choices
LEARNING TASKS - Begin your lesson with DO NOW question on the board. "What is your favorite food?" Give them several minutes to think about and write their answers down. I'm not going to give you examples - but most likely the students will give you the unhealthy ones. It's ok - just tell them that today they will be able to correct this unhealthy lifestyle.
Now - continue your lesson by letting your students create a stretch book about healthy food choices.

After your students have created healthy food choices stretch book begin the topic with words to know.
Starch - provider of long lasting energy. Source of starches are potatoes - rice - wheat.
Fiber - plays important role in removing waste from the body.
Tell the students that starch and fiber are complex carbohydrates.
In order to make a healthy food choice you need to know which foods are healthy and which are not. The decisions should be made based on what my friends are eating. Instead - they should be made by you - because you know which food is healthy and which is not.
Which food to limit?
Cutting down on salt
- Cut down salty foods
- Buy brands with less salt
- Eat less canned and packed food
However - sodium is an important mineral for the body. It controls body fluid. But if you eat too much salt - it will cause heart disease and high blood pressure.
Reducing fat and cholesterol
- Choose low fat milk products
- Avoid fried foods
- Eat lean meat
- Eat low fat desserts
Eggs - milk - butter - meat they overload your bodies with saturated fat and cholesterol. High number of cholesterol and fat leads to heart disease.
Cut down on caffeine
- Drink less coffee
- Get enough rest
Caffeine speeds up the heart beat - that's why people can't fall asleep at night.
Cut down on sugar
- Eat less sugary food
- Drink less of soft drinks
Sugar is a great contributor of empty calories. It is also contributes to tooth decay. Which will make you to go to a dentist. No one likes to go to a dentist - but that's another topic.
Ok - this lesson is to make you aware of what type of foods to limit. LIMIT. I am not saying completely avoid - just limit or eat less. Some of this food is very important to a healthy well being. But having too much of it will cause health problems.
