Health Lesson Plan
Health Lesson Plan
First Aid - Burns
Standard 2.1 All students will learn and apply health promotion concepts and skills to support a healthy - active lifestyle.
CPI - Explain and demonstrate ways to prevent injuries - including seat belts and child safety seats in motor vehicles - protective gear - fire - bus - and traffic safety procedures.
Grade - 12
Goal of the health lesson plan - The students will teach each other different types of burns and learn how to care for burns
Objectives -
At the conclusion of the health lesson the students will be able to -
- Describe three types of burns and their degree to peers in the group by using communication skills
- Relate to the personal experiences and classify their injury
- Apply treatment techniques during burn injuries in the emergency situation
Learning tasks -
There will be a do now question on the board. The question is "Has anyone ever had any burn injuries?" The students will have a couple of minutes to think about it and then I will pick students to share with the whole class.
Then -
- I will break up the class into groups of three
- Each member of the group will have a separate topic to talk about
- One student will research about the types of burns
- Second student will research about care for burns
- Third student will research about causes of burns
- Then - all students that have types of burns will gather up in one corner of the class and find the information about it in the book. They are going to have to know three types of burns - their descriptions and provide an example for each type of burn
- All students that have care for burns will gather up in another corner of the class and will find information about four steps for care of burns - two steps to care for chemical burns and five steps to treat electrical burns
- Those students that have causes of burns will sit in another corner and will find information about causes of burns - six things that severity of burn depends on and four things for severity of electrical burns
- The students will have about ten minutes to find information about their topic and then they will return to their original groups where they are each going to teach each other about their topic
My job as a teacher will be monitoring the students for on task behaviour and answering any question they might have.
My closure of the class will summarize the class topic by asking the students - what are the three types of burns? What are the four steps for care of burns and name causes of burns?
These are the questions that each member of the group gets -
Types of wounds
- What are the three types of burns?
- What is their description?
- Provide an example for each type of a wound
Care
- Name four steps for care of burns
- Name two steps to care for chemical burns
- Name five steps to treat electrical burns
Causes
- Name causes of burns
- Name six things that severity of burns depends on
- Name four things for severity of electrical burn
Have a fun health lesson!!!
Reflection for health lesson plan
As a health and physical educator I want to have a health lesson plan and physical education lesson plan in my portfolio. In this writing I will reflect on my health lesson plan that I did during my senior internship.
The reason why I decided to include this specific lesson plan - when I taught Burns Unit - my cooperating teacher taught me a very interesting cooperating activity that worked very well during the lesson. It is called "Jigsaw". It is a very dynamic and social group work activity where students develop social, communication skills and at the same time learn the material. The reason I say dynamic because it was a class at 7:40 a.m. in the morning and half of the class falls asleep and that activity kept students very involved and fresh.
As I monitored the students throughout the class I saw students interacting with each other. One of my concerns before this lesson was whether students will want to talk about a topic in groups and then share it. However - this was the right class and that activity was right for them.
With all the positive things about this lesson plan there is a negative as well. If there is a student who does not like to work in groups and very antisocial then there is a problem. Despite all those students who liked group activity there was one very antisocial student and he refused to participate. So - with this activity I found that I have to be very careful to which class I can expose it to and if I do - with what types of students I am going to group them together.
