Following Dietary Guidelines

Standards: NJCCS 2.1. Wellness

Objectives:

  • The students will explain how to follow dietary guidelines.
  • The students will discuss the use of food groups to develop healthy eating.
  • The students will be able to explain why they need to eat breakfast.
  • The students will be able to identify ways to choose healthy snacks.

Materials:

  • Following guidelines fill in worksheet.

Skills:

  • Following guidelines.
  • Know how to be physically active.
  • Know how to get nutrients from food.
  • Choose diet low in fat and cholesterol.
  • Keep food safe to eat.

Procedure:

Introductory Activity: List five good nutrition habits that are important throughout life.

Developmental Activity: The teacher will present nine guidelines, while the students will record them on the fill in worksheet.

To check for understanding the teacher will show examples of nine guidelines and students are going to say which one that is.

The students will be divided into small groups. Each group will receive a scenario about someone following or not following guidelines. Each group is going to analyze, evaluate, and predict outcomes in that scenario. Each group will have a chance to present their scenario in front of the class.

Concluding Activity: How does eating well now prepare you for a healthy future?What foods do the guidelines recommend limiting?Which food could be deleted from a person’s diet altogether?What kind of beverages might be high in sugar?

Assessment:

For homework, each student will receive a scenario about someone who is following or isn’t following guidelines. Student is going to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate and make adjustments for the better of that person. Student is allowed to refer back to the nine guidelines worksheet.
